PRINCIPAL JOB DESCRIPTION


Under the general direction of the Superintendent, the principal provides leadership for the school site.

Instructional Leadership

The principal is responsible for establishing a climate for learning by developing mutual trust and respect among those professionals involved in the instructional program by:

1. Identifying, developing and evaluations the goals and objectives of the instructional program.
2. Assisting in identifying and evaluating the instructional needs of all students.
3. Identifying, developing, and coordinating the support services, inservice and resources available to teachers.
4. Assigning, supervising and evaluating school staff.
5. Coordinating the selection, purchase, use and evaluation of curriculum materials, instructional supplies and equipment and making appropriate recommendations.
6. Assisting in the development, implementation, articulation and continuous evaluation of the instructional objectives.


Administrative Leadership

The principal ensures the efficient organization and administration of the total school program in accordance with the Education Code and Board policy. This includes establishing clear lines of responsibility with necessary delegation of authority.

1. Participates in the selection and assignment of the school staff.
2. Coordinates support services as provided within the school, district, county, state and community.
3. Interprets and applies legal requirements, rules, regulations, policies and procedures with teachers, students and parents, and makes necessary recommendations for changes.
4. Maintains timely and effective communication with the Superintendent, district office personnel, community and staff.
5. Participates in and seeks solutions to administrative matters affecting the school and district.
6. Serves on the Management Team.
7. Schedules activities, programs and classes according to student needs.
8. Sees that extra-curricular activities are properly organized and supervised.
9. Provides leadership to the staff in determining objectives and identifying school needs as the basis for developing long- and short-range plans for the school.
10. Develops and implements school plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline and conduct of students as established in district procedures
11. Promotes and participates in articulation with elementary, intermediate and high school personnel, and other youth serving agencies.
12. Plans, supervises and directs the business operation of the school in accordance with district policies and procedures.
13. Manages the school site budget; participates in the formulation of the district budget.
14. Contributes to the development and revision of district policies and procedures.
15. Establishes a system for selection, purchase and evaluation of supplies and equipment.
16. Maintains records necessary to the total operation of the school.
17. Coordinates facility operations and utilization of the school. 
18. Assists in district school plant planning.
19. Supervises daily custodial operations and evaluates site custodial staff.


School Climate

The principal establishes a positive school climate by:

1. Encouraging a professional school climate for students and staff which supports high morale.
2. Developing school plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline and conduct of students as established by school and district procedures and policies.
3. Maintaining a school environment in which communication, participation and teamwork among staff, students, administrators and community are encouraged.
4. Encouraging new ideas and maintaining a positive attitude and a spirit of flexibility.
5. Organizing and scheduling the school in a manner that is conducive to a positive school environment.
6. Determining that school policies concerning students are well known to all concerned.

Student Relations

The principal promotes the expectation of positive student relations by:

1. Frequently visiting classrooms, playground and extra-curricular activities.
2. Being available to students on a regular basis.
3. Counseling with students concerning preventive and remedial measures.
4. Serving as a liaison between student and teacher.
5. Dealing consistently with all students in accordance with the school and district discipline policies and procedures.
6. With the assistance of faculty, students and parents planning and organizing activities and programs for the student's benefit.


Parent and Community Relations

The principal promotes good relations with parents and the community by:

1. Developing programs with the community as a means of interpreting and furthering school programs through parent groups and other community organizations.
2. Interpreting the school program to the parents and the community.
3. Encouraging and enlisting the support of parents and community groups in maintaining quality instruction and a positive school climate.
4. Actively participating in the Parents Club programs.
5. Counseling with parents about individual student needs.
6. Encouraging teachers to promote good public relations through their classroom activities with the students.
7. Serving as a liaison between parent and teacher.
8. Coordinating effective use of college and community resources and personnel.


Staff Relations

The principal promotes sound relations among staff by:

1. Encouraging program improvements; supporting new and innovative solutions to instructional issues where appropriate.
2. Communicating an interest in and an awareness of each teacher's instructional program.
3. Establishing effective lines of communication so that all staff members have the opportunity to contribute to the school program.
4. Assisting and counseling staff members in areas of student, parent and staff concerns and needs.
5. Supervising and evaluating the performance of all assigned personnel in a timely manner in accordance with the district's negotiated agreements for evaluation and assessment. Recommending appropriate action in cases of performances that need improvement and identifying and encouraging individual teachers with leadership potential.

Professional Growth

The principal encourages the professional growth of the staff by:

1. Engaging in a program of professional growth activities including professional reading, university course work and attendance at forums and conventions.
2. Being receptive to changes and innovations in education.
3. Demonstrating a genuine pride and loyalty toward the profession of education.
